Histrionic Personality and Its Subtypes

Histrionic personality consists of intense emotionality and attention-seeking behaviors. Histrionic behavior, like narcissism, is prevalent in our society. According to the DSM-5, the prevalence of Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) was found to be 1.84% in the early 2000s, and although HPD is diagnosed more often in female clients, “the sex ratio is not significantly different from the sex ratio of females within the respective clinical setting. In contrast, some APA studies using structured assessments report similar prevalence rates among males and females.” Thus, HPD can manifest in both male and female clients.
